Bridgeport Public Library and schools celebrate Read Aloud Day, expand literacy partnership

The Bridgeport Public Library joined with Bridgeport Public Schools to celebrate Read Aloud Day on March 12 while unveiling an expanded literacy initiative aimed at city students.
As part of the partnership, all third-grade classes in Bridgeport will visit their nearest library branch during March for 90-minute literacy experiences. Students will participate in story time, crafts, and learn how the library works, with the opportunity to check out books to take home. Transportation for the visits is provided by the Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library.
The initiative also includes expanded access to library cards. Families registering students at the Central Registration Enrollment Center at the CT State Housatonic can now apply for library cards during the enrollment process, ensuring students have immediate access to books and other resources.

“Connecting children with books, activities, resources, and a lifelong love of reading is central to our mission,” said City Librarian Elaine Braithwaite. “Through this partnership with Bridgeport Public Schools, we are making sure every student knows that each branch of the Bridgeport Public Library is a welcoming place for learning, discovery, and opportunity.”
Interim Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery said the partnership strengthens literacy citywide. “Reading is the foundation of strong academics. Through our partnership with the Bridgeport Public Library, we are expanding opportunities for students and families to connect with books, resources, and experiences that help build a lifelong love of learning,” he said.
The initiative comes in response to concerns over the reduction of school librarians for the 2026–2027 school year and reflects a shared commitment to literacy and educational access throughout Bridgeport.
Families and students are encouraged to explore free programs, resources, and services available at all BPL branches.
