Goodspeed writers of ‘The Snow Goose’ receive 2025 Jonathan Larson Grant

Goodspeed Musicals announced that Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie, the writing team behind its upcoming world premiere of “The Snow Goose,” have been named recipients of the 2025 Jonathan Larson Grant.

The prestigious award, established by the American Theatre Wing, recognizes exceptional emerging composers, lyricists, librettists, and writing teams in musical theater. The grant is named for composer Jonathan Larson, who posthumously won a Pulitzer Prize and four Tony Awards.

Gilmour and McKenzie’s musical, “The Snow Goose,” will debut at Goodspeed Musicals from Aug. 28 through Oct. 18. The production, commissioned as part of Goodspeed’s GoodWorks program, marks the first GoodWorks project to be produced on the Goodspeed stage. The musical is based on the novel by Paul Gallico.

In a joint statement, Gilmour and McKenzie said they were honored to receive the grant and to be embraced by the American theater community.

“Goodspeed was one of the first organizations to see that potential in us and offer their support and experience through granting us a platform for our work,” they said. “We’re delighted that in the same year we’re receiving this grant, we also get to return to Goodspeed with our newest work, ‘The Snow Goose.’”

Artistic Director Donna Lynn Hilton said Goodspeed has long recognized the pair’s talents.

“I am thrilled that they are being acknowledged with this most well-deserved prize,” Hilton said. “We are excited that this news coincides with our upcoming production of ‘The Snow Goose,’ which will give audiences the opportunity to enjoy and celebrate their work on The Goodspeed stage.”

Through the Jonathan Larson Grants, recipients receive financial support and flexibility to advance their professional development and bring new works from concept to production. The award is widely regarded as an indicator of rising talent in musical theater.

Other 2025 recipients include multimedia artist Fouad Dakwar and composer, lyricist, and librettist Adam J. Rineer, both of whom have participated in Goodspeed’s Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove program.
