Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall’s ‘The Mountaintop’ to open at Playhouse on Park

The mountaintop at playhouse on park in west hartford, connecticut

Playhouse on Park (244 Park Rd, West Hartford, CT 06119) will present The Mountaintop, the acclaimed drama by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall, March 4–22, 2026.

Directed by Jamil A.C. Mangan, the Olivier Award-winning play imagines the final night of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life. Set on April 3, 1968, the story takes place in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where King has just delivered his famed “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech.

In Hall’s reimagining, an exhausted King retires to his motel room and is visited by a mysterious maid named Camae. What begins as lighthearted conversation deepens into a soul-searching exchange about hope, fear and legacy. When Camae reveals a startling secret, King is forced to confront his destiny and the weight of history.

“We all know Dr. King as a symbol — an icon frozen in history,” Mangan said in a statement. “This play asks us to lean closer and discover the man: tired, funny, fearful, hopeful, human. The Mountaintop invites us not just to admire him, but to sit with him, listen to him and recognize ourselves in him.”

The production stars Torrey Linder as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Linder previously appeared at Playhouse on Park in The Scottsboro Boys and has performed nationally in Beautiful: The Carole King MusicalElf and Dirty Dancing. Jasmine Shanise will portray Camae. Her credits include Primary Trust at Portland Theater Festival and appearances on television series including Your Honor and Dexter: Original Sin.

Mangan returns to direct at Playhouse on Park after helming Toni Stone. As an actor, he won the Connecticut Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for Fences at the theater and earned a Best Actor nomination for portraying King in The Mountaintop at TheatreWorks Hartford.

Preview performances are scheduled for March 4 and 5, with regular performances running March 6–22. Showtimes include Friday evenings, Saturday matinees and evenings, Sunday matinees with post-show talkbacks, and select Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday performances. Discounted morning performances at 10:30 a.m. will be offered March 12 and March 20.

Preview tickets are $35. Regular performances range from $45 to $55 for adults, plus a service charge. Discounts are available for seniors, military members and patrons under 40. The production is part of the theater’s three-show subscription package.
