Old State House marks America’s 250th with First Night Hartford events

Connecticut’s Old State House will begin commemorating the nation’s 250th birthday with a slate of family-friendly activities during First Night Hartford on December 31.

The events will take place from 2 to 5:45 p.m. at the historic museum at 800 Main St., offering visitors an opportunity to explore the building’s Revolutionary War history while taking part in interactive programs for both children and adults.

Museum educators will be stationed throughout the Old State House to share stories and historical context connected to the building, which played a central role in Connecticut’s colonial and early statehood eras.

Planned activities include Hamilton karaoke, self-guided exploration through the museum’s galleries, and a themed “provisions” scavenger hunt. Younger visitors will have opportunities to create tricorn hats, dress in Revolutionary War–era costumes and participate in hands-on crafting activities led by the creative team from Night Fall.

Old State House officials said the First Night Hartford programming is intended to introduce visitors to the upcoming America 250 commemorations, which will continue in the years ahead as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding in 2026.

The event is part of First Night Hartford’s citywide New Year’s Eve celebration and offers a historical component to the broader festivities taking place throughout downtown.
