Hartford Athletic’s Danny Barrera named head coach of upcoming USL W League team

Hartford Athletic has announced that longtime club professional Danny Barrera will lead the organization’s new USL W League team as head coach when it debuts in the summer of 2026.
Earlier this year, Hartford confirmed its plans to join the USL W League, the nation’s premier pre-professional women’s soccer league. The league serves as a vital bridge between elite youth, collegiate, and professional levels, offering top competition while maintaining NCAA eligibility for college athletes. Matches run from early May through late June, with playoffs extending into July.
As of 2025, the USL W League features more than 90 clubs across over 25 states, highlighting its rapid national growth and influence in women’s soccer.
“Bringing a women’s team to Hartford is a huge moment for our club and our community,” said Hartford Athletic General Manager and men’s head coach Brendan Burke. “The USL W League gives us an incredible platform to grow the game, inspire the next generation, and showcase top-level women’s soccer right here in Connecticut. We can’t wait for fans to experience this new era of Hartford Athletic.”

From Club Legend to Coach
Barrera joined Hartford Athletic midway through the club’s inaugural 2019 season and remained with the Green & Blue until his retirement in 2024. During his five-and-a-half years with the team, the Bogotá, Colombia native became one of the club’s most decorated players, setting numerous all-time records—including appearances (150), minutes (10,773), assists (34), and goals (17, a record recently surpassed by Mamadou Dieng).
In 2021, Barrera earned USL All-League First Team honors after a standout season in which he tallied eight goals and led the league with 12 assists.
Following his retirement at age 34, Barrera transitioned into coaching within the Hartford Athletic Academy, serving as Director of Player Experience and Development. He credits his time with the club for preparing him for the next step in his career.
“My vision is to create a pathway for girls in Connecticut and the Northeast—a place where they can train at a very high level and be prepared for the next step in their journey,” Barrera said. “Players will be treated as professionals and have access to the best resources and training environments.”
Building a Foundation for Women’s Soccer
The USL W League’s mission to elevate women’s soccer aligns closely with Hartford Athletic’s broader commitment to growing the game at every level. Chief Operating Officer Michele Roux praised Barrera’s evolution within the club and his leadership role in this new initiative.
“Danny has given so much to Hartford Athletic over the years, both on and off the field,” Roux said. “Watching his transition from club pro to Academy leader, and now to W League head coach, has been incredible. We’re excited about this next chapter for him and what it means for women’s soccer development in our community.”
Barrera emphasized the unique connection between Hartford’s youth academy and first team, noting that adding a women’s pre-professional squad will create meaningful role models for young female athletes.
“It’s exciting that we’re investing in the women’s game, especially when we already have a youth academy for girls,” he said. “It gives them something to look up to.”
To aspiring players, Barrera offered a simple message: “Be ready to work. And enjoy yourself. Come here and you will be better after the season than you were when you came in. That I can guarantee.”
Hartford Athletic will host open tryouts for the women’s first team on December 15, 16, and 18. Additional announcements regarding schedules, tickets, and roster updates will be shared in the coming months.
