Gerald Saladyga’s DOT Works: Light, Minimalism, and Healing Spaces on display at Whitney Center’s Wellness Center

Connecticut native Gerald Saladyga, a Hamden-based artist, has long explored the interplay of light and landscape in his work. Between 2000 and 2004, Saladyga developed his groundbreaking DOT Works series, a body of work in which he captured the essence of light as the 19th-century Luminists might have seen it—isolated, radiant, and transformative. By applying closely positioned dots of latex house paint with an eye dropper onto layered canvas, paper, or wood, Saladyga was able to simulate bright light, hazy light, gray light, and even night light. Sanding the dots to an equal depth, he created particles of light that evoked the fleeting beauty of first sight, while framing them in a contemporary, all-over minimalist structure.
Over time, these dots evolved beyond pure light, becoming symbolic and fractured depictions of land, sky, water, and the cosmos, demonstrating Saladyga’s ability to blend technical precision with imaginative exploration.

Currently, a portion of the DOT Works series has been installed at the Whitney Center’s Wellness Center in Hamden, CT. These artworks grace the walls with abstracted, natural vistas, encouraging organic interpretation and reflection within a space designed for well-being. Complementing Saladyga’s work is a living green wall created by Perception Horticulture of Valatia, NY, featuring medicinal plants that highlight the restorative and healthful qualities of the natural world. Together, the artwork and green installation transform the Wellness Center into a contemplative, healing environment.
Saladyga, who received his BA from Sacred Heart University and an MA-equivalent teaching degree from Southern Connecticut State University, also studied at the Art Students’ League in New York City. He maintains a studio just outside New Haven, continuing to explore the intersections of light, space, and nature in contemporary art.
For those interested in experiencing his work in person, Saladyga has an upcoming show at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, running from October 5, 2025, to January 11, 2026, with an opening reception on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, he will open his studio to the public during October’s Open Studios on Saturday, October 25, from 12–5 p.m., and Sunday, October 26, from 12–4 p.m., at Highwood Square in Hamden (943 Dixwell Avenue).
Saladyga’s DOT Works series exemplifies the power of art to evoke light, nature, and contemplation—an invitation to pause, reflect, and connect with both the visual world and the inner self.
