‘Ink and Impressions’ exhibit celebrating 110 years of American printmaking to open at Housatonic Museum of Art

The Housatonic Museum of Art (900 Lafayette Blvd, Bridgeport, CT 06604) is proud to announce the opening of “Ink and Impressions: 110 Years of the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA),” a major national printmaking exhibition debuting September 10, 2025.  This ambitious showcase celebrates over a century of American printmaking with artists from more than 30 states, and features work by printmakers also on view in a concurrent exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking of Norwalk.

A free opening reception will be held Wednesday, September 10, from 5:30-7:00pm, featuring appetizers, drinks, and the chance to meet many of the participating artists. The exhibition will remain on view through February 13, 2026.

“It has been a true honor to collaborate with SAGA as they celebrate their 110 years as an organization. This exhibition is a testament to the strength of their organization and to printmaking in the 21st century,” said Jennifer Reynolds-Kaye, PhD., Director of the Housatonic Museum of Art. “We are thrilled to introduce our CT State Housatonic students and the Bridgeport community to the artists and artworks in this exhibition, and are grateful to SAGA, the sponsors, and the jury for making this important commemoration happen.”

Ink and Impressions includes more than 150 original hand-pulled prints in a wide range of techniques and styles, spotlighting both emerging and established artists, including works by historic members such as Ann Chernow, Isabel Bishop, and Rafael Soyer. The Center for Contemporary Printmaking, a nationally recognized institution based in Connecticut, will also be a key participant in this celebration by having a number of SAGA member artists on view during their annual members exhibition through the winter concurrent exhibition, contributing to the Housatonic Museum of Art’s awards selection, and supporting related programs. These collaborative efforts underscore Connecticut’s significant place in the American printmaking landscape and reflect the strength of its creative community.

“In the years that I have come to know SAGA as an organization and various of its members, I have been impressed by the high caliber of quality demonstrated through the work of these artists. The prints submitted for this member exhibition exemplify that mastery and made the awards selection process incredibly challenging, not only due to the skill required, but they also showcase the rich range of imagery and markmaking possible within the medium,” said Kimberly Henrikson, Executive Director, Center for Contemporary Printmaking.

Visitors can also take part in a dynamic lineup of exhibition programs, including a juried awards presentation, and the release of a full-color exhibition catalog. Together, these elements offer a compelling lens into the legacy—and future—of American printmaking.

Jurors who selected the award winners for this year’s exhibition include Kimberly Henrikson, Executive Director, Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, CT; Irene Michnicki, Collaborative Printer, Milestone Graphics Fine Prints, New Haven, CT; and Jennifer Reynolds-Kaye, PhD, Director, Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport, CT.

“SAGA is honored to hold our anniversary show in the beautiful Burt Chernow Galleries, and we are deeply grateful to Jennifer Reynolds-Kaye and Charlotte Lefland for helping us put together this exhibition,” stated Colleen Pike Blair, MHA, SAGA President.  “We’re excited to celebrate SAGA’s 110th anniversary and our deep tradition of creating and promoting printmaking arts by bringing this year’s selection of fine art prints to the Bridgeport community, and we think that Ink and Impressions might challenge your expectations. Whether you are a student, a teacher, a curator or a newcomer to printmaking, we hope you will take time to join in the act of imagination that the arts and this museum extend freely.”

Sponsors for the exhibition include The Art Students League of New York; BLICK Art Materials;  E.C. Lyons Company; Hiromi Paper, Inc.; McClain’s Printmaking Supplies; The Noble Maritime Collection; The Old Print Shop, Inc.; Conservation Framing Services; and Speedball Art.
