Habitat for Humanity marks construction milestone at Burnside Hope development

Habitat for Humanity of North Central Connecticut (HFHNCC) is celebrating a milestone that has been one year in the making, this May – the transformation of a large vacant lot into the Burnside Hope Development in East Hartford.

This private community of 10 single-family Zero-Energy Ready homes are nearing completion, and the teams of women who started the project are returning to put the final touches on these homes.

As part of Habitat’s Women Build program, ladies from Hubbell Watch, Peoples Bank, the Connecticut Women’s Council, Legrand, and others framed and erected walls for the first three homes one year ago. Now, they are preparing these homes for 10 families to live in by the end of the year.

“Leading my Women Build team is a commitment I cherish deeply,” said Susan Lane Spremullo, a long-time Habitat volunteer. “I strongly believe in Habitat’s mission of building safe, affordable homes and tackling systemic housing barriers. Women Build uniquely empowers women—providing skills, fostering community and directly addressing the housing needs impacting women and children. I’m thrilled to bring my team back again to Burnside Hope this year to finish the important work we began last year.”

“The Burnside Hope Development represents not only a significant achievement in Habitat’s mission to provide affordable housing, but it also showcases the strength of community partnerships and volunteer spirit,” said Kris McKelvie, HFHNCC COO. “What began as a bare patch of ground is now a nearly completed, vibrant neighborhood—thanks in large part to the sweat equity and commitment of volunteers like these Women Build teams.”

The dedication ceremony for HFHNCC’s Burnside Hope Development was on November 7, 2025.
