Orchestrated Realities
Orchestrated Realities is an exhibition of digital and mixed-media collage artworks by Karen Neems taking place at The Gallery at Still River Editions in Danbury, Connecticut from April 14th through July 3rd, 2025. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, April 26th from 2 pm – 4 pm. The event and exhibition are free and open to the public.
Karen Neems is an artist based in Stamford, Connecticut who has had numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries and museums in the Northeast. Last year, she was among ten photographic artists included in an exhibition called In/Sight at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan. Whether she is creating collages digitally or cutting and pasting prints and other media, Neems says she chooses “to use photography to explore the relationships between images I observe and record, rather than for its documentary aspect.”
She says, “I started experimenting with combining images digitally 15 years ago and was excited by what I created.” She was drawn to what she calls “orchestrated realities and perceptual puzzles” that evolved by layering and repeating images. “At first glance, the finished compositions may seem like they could exist, but on further inspection you can see the incongruities.”
Orchestrated Realities includes works from Neems’ series Deconstructions, which developed from her desire to physically manipulate the materials. In each “deconstruction” Neems used a photograph or digital photo collage she created, then paired it with a collage made of carefully cut and rearranged sections constructed from the same image, along with additional materials to “foster the illusion of space and connections created”.
The exhibition also includes recent collages for which Neems combines photographs she has captured into new images for a series called Reconstructions. Some create entirely novel geometric shapes as in Daydream, the image used for the exhibition postcard. For this series she says, “I push the connections further to find a common thread, linking the separate images through content, color and construction.”
Neems earned her BA in Art History, Psychology, and Studio Art at The University of Rochester. As a student of Art History she was drawn to the work of Russian Constructivists and early collagists.
She continued her academic work in photography, which culminated at the George Eastman House.
Her work is in both private and corporate collections.
The Gallery at Still River Editions is located at 128 East Liberty St., Danbury, CT. 203-791-1474. Gallery hours are 8:30 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday; closed Memorial Day.
