Concert Review: Howard Jones Brings Timeless Synth-Pop Magic to New Haven

On February 26th, the legendary Howard Jones graced the stage at College Street Music Hall, delivering an evening of uplifting music and boundless energy that left the New Haven audience spellbound. With his signature blend of heartfelt lyricism, soaring melodies, and pioneering synth-pop sounds, Jones once again proved why he remains one of the most beloved artists of the 1980s and beyond.
Jones first rose to fame with his 1984 debut album Human’s Lib, a record that quickly cemented his place in the British New Wave movement. With hits like What Is Love?, New Song, and Pearl in the Shell, he became known for his infectious optimism and forward-thinking electronic arrangements. His follow-up, Dream Into Action (1985), launched him into international superstardom, producing anthems like Things Can Only Get Better, No One Is to Blame, and Life in One Day. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Jones has remained deeply connected to his fans over the decades, constantly evolving his sound while staying true to the messages of hope and self-empowerment that have defined his career.
At College Street Music Hall, Jones took the audience on a journey through his remarkable catalog, seamlessly blending nostalgia with fresh interpretations of his classics. Opening with the unmistakable synth chords of Like to Get to Know You Well, the night was immediately infused with warmth and positivity. The audience, a mix of lifelong fans and newer admirers, swayed and sang along, embracing the joyous spirit of the music.

Throughout the evening, Jones’ stage presence was nothing short of radiant. His voice, still rich and expressive, carried each song with the same passion that made them classics in the first place. The pulsating energy of Things Can Only Get Better had the entire venue on its feet, while the poignant beauty of No One Is to Blame brought a hush over the crowd, reminding everyone of Jones’ gift for deeply personal, introspective songwriting.
Backed by a stellar band and an array of synthesizers that paid homage to his pioneering electronic sound, Jones effortlessly blended past and present. He also took time between songs to reflect on his journey, sharing heartfelt anecdotes that made the performance feel intimate and personal. His sincerity and connection with the audience were undeniable—a reminder of why he has remained such a cherished figure in music for over so many years.

By the time the night drew to a close, with a triumphant rendition of Everlasting Love, it was clear that Jones had not just performed a concert—he had created a shared experience of joy, nostalgia, and inspiration. His music has always carried a message of optimism and perseverance, and on this night in New Haven, he reaffirmed his role as a beacon of positivity in the world of music.

For those lucky enough to be in attendance, Howard Jones didn’t just perform—he uplifted, he inspired, and he reminded us all why his music continues to resonate so powerfully across generations. It was a night to remember, and a testament to the enduring magic of an artist who, after all these years, still believes in the power of a great song to change the world.
