New Members
Art/Place Gallery invites the public to a reception for “New Members”, the show of work by Rosa Sclafani and Stephanie Hilton, on Sunday, March 16 at 2 to 4 pm. They will talk about their work at 4 pm. The show can be seen from March 5 to 30 from 12-5 on Tuesday to Friday at 70 Sanford Street in Fairfield. Art/Place is a non-profit, artist-run gallery that has been in existence for more than 40 years. It features a new show by one or two members every month and several group shows a year.
Rosa Elvira Sclafani
Rosa Elvira Sclafani is a Connecticut-based watercolor artist who specializes in realistic works. She was born in Lima, Peru, and first discovered her passion for painting 28 years ago when her two young children began school. She enrolled in courses to learn to paint Folk Art with acrylic and gouache. As a member of the Society of Decorative Painters, Rosa began taking classes using Oil and Watercolor. She eventually enrolled at Norwalk Community College, in Norwalk, CT, where she studied Fine Arts. She also studied at the Rowayton Arts Center and Silvermine School of Arts. Her work, including her photography, has been exhibited in numerous juried and group shows in Connecticut and New York. Rosa’s artwork was selected and featured in the Book “Colors” Women Edition 2024 – Art to Hearts Project 100 selected Emerging Artists Around the World. Rosa states: “My paintings reflect my emotions and culture. Working with watercolors gives me the freedom to express and capture what I see. Through the process of applying color and refining images using a sequence of washes and glazes, I am able to create desired techniques or effects to produce depth, textures, and color in my works. This has also contributed to my passion for photography which allows me to document my personal experiences – capturing objects and scenes that I later use in my painting. I was first introduced to art at a young age by watching my father paint, draw, and admire the works of great artists such as Picasso, Degas, Da Vinci etc. I am inspired by my Peruvian roots including the vibrant colors, nature, and culture of my native country.
Stephanie Hilton
Stephanie Hilton is a Fairfield, CT based watercolor & mixed media artist who was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and spent many years as an advertising art director in NYC. She has studied at the School of Visual Arts, the Silvermine Guild of Artists and Rowayton Arts Center in CT. Her work has been shown in a number of juried and group shows and won several prestigious awards in 2024. Stephanie is a proud exhibiting member of the Rowyaton Art Center, Ridgefield Guild of Artists, Stamford Art Association, Art/Place Gallery in Fairfield and Carriage Barn Art Center New Canaan.
Stephanie states, “I’ve always been a creative soul and quite passionate about different kinds of art. Painting and drawing for as long as I can remember, living and working in NYC gave me the opportunity to visit museums often. My love for watercolor really grew after seeing works by Maurice Prendergast at the MET. Painting everything from murals to furniture to fabric, these days I spend most of my creative energy on watercolor landscapes and weaving. Using photos from beloved family travels, Maine, Aruba, Colorado and the Connecticut shoreline have all found their way into my work. Besides exploring more traditional watercolor techniques, I also create 3D watercolor panels by weaving multiple paintings together as one. Additionally, I sometimes incorporate natural materials like stones, shells and small pebbles into my art, often taken from the spots that I’ve painted. I love using box frames in most of my work, as it reminds me of the dioramas I loved as a child and mimics a window onto another magical world! Fun and colorful reminders of beautiful places I’ve been, and places I love that bring me joy and peace! When I’m not painting I enjoy spending time with my family, new granddaughter Eleanor and Rufus the mini Bernadoodle. I am also frequent volunteer at our very own Fairfield Theater Company.”
