Concert Review: Electric Memories – Duran Duran Reignites the Stage
Duran Duran, the iconic British new wave band, achieved major success in the U.S. throughout the 1980s and beyond, with a string of memorable hits that defined the MTV era. Their first major U.S. hit was “Hungry Like the Wolf”(1982), known for its infectious beat and jungle-themed music video, which catapulted them to fame and reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Soon after, “Rio”(1982) and “Save a Prayer”(1982) also became fan favorites, with “Rio” in particular receiving heavy MTV rotation for its glamorous video set in exotic locations. “The Reflex”(1984) became their first U.S. No. 1 hit, with its unique production style and catchy chorus. Another chart-topper, “A View to a Kill”(1985), was the theme for the James Bond film of the same name and remains the only Bond theme to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Later hits like “Notorious”(1986) and “I Don’t Want Your Love”(1988) showcased their evolving sound, keeping them relevant through the late ’80s. In the ’90s, they saw a resurgence with “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone” from their 1993 self-titled album, both reaching the top 10. These hits solidified Duran Duran’s status as one of the most influential bands in pop and rock, with a legacy that still resonates with fans today.
The band brought that very legacy, pure energy, and charisma to Mohegan Sun on October 25, reminding everyone why they’re still one of the most captivating live bands after more than four decades. The sold-out crowd was electrified from the first note, fully embracing the opportunity to witness a band that has not only stood the test of time but has continued to evolve in a way that feels both true to their roots and fresh.
Opening with the infectious bassline of “Night Boat,” the band dove right into a setlist that balanced beloved classics with selections from their latest album, Danse Macabre. Simon Le Bon’s voice was strong and vibrant, his vocals somehow both sharp and smooth, adding intensity to every lyric. There was a theatrical edge to the performance, enhanced by the stage’s dazzling visuals and atmospheric lighting that seemed custom-built for Duran Duran’s synth-pop aesthetic
Bassist John Taylor was as cool as ever, showing off his iconic grooves on tracks like “Notorious” and “Girls on Film.” Each song felt like acelebration of the band’s legacy, with fans singing along to every word, while newer songs like the haunting “Danse Macabre” were met with just as much enthusiasm. Nick Rhodes, a wizard on the keyboards, worked his usual magic, weaving melodies that sent the audience into a trance, and the steady drumming kept the whole performance locked into a tight rhythm.
The highlights, though, were when the band dug into their deeper cuts. “Ordinary World” brought raw emotion to the room, with Le Bon pouring his heart into every line as the audience held up their phones and lighters, creating a sea of lights. And the encore was unforgettable: closing with “Save a Prayer” and “Rio,” the band left the crowd swaying, singing, and soaking in every last moment.
Duran Duran didn’t just deliver a concert—they created an experience that was both nostalgic and forward-looking. There’s a reason they’re still filling venues, and after tonight, it’s clear they have no plans of stopping. Fans left Mohegan Sun buzzing, knowing they’d just witnessed something timeless.
