Lisa Loeb and the Nine Stories
Lisa Loeb, a GRAMMY-winning and platinum-selling artist, has just released her latest album, That’s What It’s All About, a collaboration with the folk music band The Hollow Trees. This album is the newest addition to Loeb’s well-received series of children’s albums, following 2016’s Feel What You Feel, which won a GRAMMY for “Best Children’s Album.” With 11 tracks, That’s What It’s All About is a musical time machine that both kids and adults can enjoy, taking listeners on a nostalgic journey down memory lane.
Leading up to its release, Loeb has released multiple singles from the album, such as “Take It While The Takin’s Good,” an original inspired by old TV shows like The Little Rascals and The Three Stooges, “A Doodlin’ Song,” featuring a tap dance solo by Loeb, “Don’t Fence Me In,” a classic cowboy song written by Cole Porter, and the beloved 1950s classic “If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’d’ve Baked a Cake.”
Loeb’s “That’s What It’s All About” is a nostalgic tribute to the songs of my childhood, the ones my parents played at home, on the record player, and on the piano. They transport me to a different time and place, from a diner in West Texas to shopping for caramels with my grandma. I can’t wait for listeners to experience the same feelings.
Upon serendipitously meeting The Hollow Trees at various shows and festivals, Loeb recognized them as the ideal band to bring her vision to life. They promptly began recording classics such as “Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,” a favorite from her childhood wind-up teddy bear; “Mairzy Doats,” which her father would play on the piano every Sunday morning; and “If I Knew You Were Comin I’d’ve Baked A Cake,” a radio hit she fondly remembers from visits to her grandparents in Sweetwater, TX. These songs were ingrained in her DNA from a young age.
That’s What It’s All About was recorded predominantly live at Kingsize Soundlabs in order to truly capture the raw energy and organic arrangements that can only come from playing together in the same room. The renowned L.A. recording studio, founded by producer Dave Trumfio, is famous for being the birthplace of numerous indie-rock albums from artists such as Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, The Violent Femmes, Wilco, Rilo Kiley, Built to Spill, and many more over the past 25 years.
According to Loeb, this album was created as a tribute to our ancestors – both those currently present and those who have passed on. It serves as a homage to the cherished tunes that have been handed down through the generations, evoking precious memories from the past.
