Counterpoints
Art/Place Gallery invites the public to a reception for “Counterpoints”, the show of art by members, Florence Zolan, Toby Michaels, Bevi Bullwinkel, and Sandra Meagher on Sunday, September 22 at 2:30 to 4:30 pm. They will talk about their work at 3:30 pm. The show can be seen from September 17 to October 13 from 12-5 Tuesday to Sunday at 70 Sanford Street in Fairfield. Art/Place is a non-profit, artist-run gallery that has been in existence for more than 40 years. It features a new show by one or two members every month and several group shows a year.
FLORENCE ZOLAN is a founding member of Art / Place Gallery. Her early studies were at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon. She received her MFA at Hunter College, taught print classes at MOMA with Sol Lewitt and studied with Yale Professor Robert Reed’s seminar group.
She is a member of Silvermine Guild, The Surface Design Association, and the Artists Collection of Westport. She has exhibited statewide and her artwork is in collections throughout the United States.
Florence states, “I enjoy the process of creating, transforming an “idea” to a completed ‘whole’. I combine mediums. Various forms of printmaking plus layers of collage, pastel, threads, paints, and objects add to the infinite possibilities.”
BEVI BULLWINKEL has exhibited at Silvermine Guild, Darien Arts Center, and has attended art workshops in California, Maine and Connecticut.
She says the importance of her work “lies in the emotion evoked by viewing my art and expressing the essence of what lies beneath the surface. I hope to express my increasing concern with the fragility and impermanence of our existence and mystery of the unknown.”
TOBY MICHAELS worked as a Registered Art Therapist for over 25 years with psychiatric patients at area hospitals. Now, she is a full time artist exhibiting her artwork in many area galleries. She can be seen in Cablevision’s “Years in the Making” and ”Creative Women Today”.
She says, “Making art for me allows me to go beyond the limits of logical thinking. This inspires me to inquire into the ‘unseen’, the endless cosmic and universal possibilities that give life to artistic expression.”
SANDRA K MEAGHER had her first art training with three great teachers at the Art Students League. She states, “They gave me knowledge of the human form and the confidence to bring invented characters to life in imagined settings. Eve Ingalls at Silvermine opened the door to emotional content. And Bob Reed in New Haven taught me how to mine a subject, even commenting later, “you have ideas falling out of your pockets.” That was until I attended his drawing marathon…”
