The Wilton Historical Society is thrilled to announce that the iconic c. 1726 Lambert House has a new roof. Constructed by David Lambert in the early 18th century, the house has served as ahome, tavern, museum headquarters, and retail shop throughout its long history. Possibly theoldest house still standing in Wilton, the structure at 150 Danbury Road is represented on theofficial Town Seal. Thanks to the installation of a new cedar shingle roof, the Lambert House willbe protected from the elements for the foreseeable future.

In 1965, the Society began its dedication to preserving historic buildings by purchasing the structure and utilizing it as the first permanent headquarters. The house now serves as the centerpiece of the current complex of nine historic structures at Lambert Corner, all of which are preserved through adaptive use, the concept of using old buildings in new ways. Wilton was the forefront of the adaptive use movement in the 1970’s allowing commercial use to provide income for restoration and ongoing maintenance.

Also replaced during this renovation was one half of the roof of Wilton’s original railroad station. Built in 1852, following the completion of the passenger and freight railroad line between Danbury and Norwalk, it originally was located on the west side of the tracks, to the north of the present station. The building continued in use until it was replaced with a new one on the east side of the tracks, in 1941. In 1978, the Wilton Historical Society dismantled and carefully rebuilt the station in its original architectural style on the Lambert Corner property.

Funding for this project was made possible through Drum Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, as well as The 1772 Foundation and PreservationConnecticut. Additional funding provided through the NAA program thanks to Wilton RE, Eversource, and Santa Energy. The Wilton Historical Society thanks them for their generous contributions. With their help, the Wilton Historical Society continues to preserve Wilton’s historical properties.
