The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is pleased to present “Getting” Contemporary Art, a three-class art
history series taught by Greenwich Academy’s art history teacher Kristen Erickson. Participants may attend all
three class sessions or just one – whatever works best for their schedule. The classes will be held on
Tuesdays July 9, 16, and 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at The Aldrich. To learn more and register visit www.thealdrich.org.
Participants will engage deeply with The Aldrich’s current exhibitions on view while having access to the
galleries and the Museum’s Studio learning space in private evening sessions. Designed to provoke open
and dynamic dialogue, these small classes will help participants learn to analyze, interpret, and discuss the
contemporary artwork on view.
The July 9 class will focus on the glass sculptures of Nigerian-born, New York-based artist Layo Bright. Uniting
varied motifs drawn from her culture and homeland, including Gele traditional head ties, “Ghana Must Go”
bags, and white orchids, Bright creates powerful works addressing racial injustice, anti-immigrant policies, and
women ’s rights.
In the July 16 class, participants with commune with the yoginis, jinas, saints, and other spiritual figures that are
embodied in Elizabeth Englander’s work. A practitioner of Zen Buddhism with a deep knowledge of Asian
religious practices, Englander employs found materials layered with their own meaning to create a new
pantheon of gods and goddesses.
Beginning with an independent reflection in the gallery, the July 23 class will explore Loie Hollowell’s luminous
abstractions of the human form focusing on her conceptualization of motherhood. In The Studio, participants
will engage in a guided activity to consider the way Hollowell challenges classical, Renaissance, and modern
depictions of women in art history.
Kristen Erickson has been teaching art history and curating exhibitions for the past three decades. She spent
eight years working in the curatorial field at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, the Smith College
Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, before turning to teaching. Kristen currently teaches art history at Greenwich Academy, where she also runs the campus art gallery. She holds degrees in
French and art history from Vassar College and Oxford University. A resident of Ridgefield, Kristen loves
making contemporary art come alive for new audiences.
