Gioia’s new rooftop space opens on June 20
First of is kind bar and dining space on Historic Wooster Street
Gioia, a restaurant, market, and gelateria located at 150 Wooster Street, New Haven, will open its rooftop dining and bar space on Thursday, June 20, 2024. The three-season, 1900-square-foot space will offer a unique menu for diners of all ages, featuring seasonal food and beverages in a casual and fun environment. Since its opening in Fall 2023, Gioia has received accolades from Yankee Magazine, Food & Wine, Hearst Connecticut, and more.
“We have had an amazing welcome to the neighborhood since opening the restaurant, market, and gelateria window in October,” said Tim Cabral, co-founder of Gioia. “Our goal was to offer a unique, casual, and joyous space, and the smiles on our guests’ faces show that we’ve achieved that. This new rooftop space will extend that fun, vibrant, laid-back atmosphere, offering the vibe of being in a courtyard where guests can enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of our magical Wooster Street neighborhood.”
The rooftop menu will include crudo options, shareable antipasti, fresh and seasonal salads, pastas, paninis, and Gioia’s unique version of grandma-style square pizza, called “Wooster Squares.” The “Pachink Pachunk” option will feature a selection of spreads with grilled sourdough for the table. Desserts will celebrate the season with sweet, savory, fruit, or chocolate flavors to satisfy every guest’s palate.
“We have created a new menu that continues GIOIA’s playfulness, now tailored for an outdoor experience with the same approachability our guests have come to appreciate,” added Avi Szapiro, executive chef and co-founder of Gioia. “The scents and flavors of our wood grill and rotisserie will be present, along with local, in-season produce, vegetarian and vegan options, and shareable plates, all composed to amplify the patio dining experience.”
The beverage program will feature a rotating selection of fresh and seasonal cocktails, categorized as bubbly, bright, bold, or Ristorativo, designed to be enjoyed al fresco in a playful, warm environment.
The rooftop was designed by Atelier Cho Thompson; architects Ming Thompson, Keith Appleby and graphic designer Celia Poirier brought the founders’ vision to life. The concept considered the rich history of the neighborhood, adding zest to the heart of New Haven’s vibrant Wooster Square, while adding a unique feature for those who love dining outdoors in a relaxed and beautiful atmosphere. Additional artisans who contributed to this new space include millwork by Tomas Talak (TT Woodworking and Remodeling LLC), plant installation by Jill Shea (founder of PlantHer Garden Coaching), floral design by Rachel Dempsey (The Floating Dahlia), art work by Jamie La Jones and Construction by A&G Contracting.
Gioia’s rooftop space will be open Thursday from 4-9 pm, Friday from 4-10 pm, Saturday from 12 pm-10 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm-8 pm. Tables and bar seating will be available on a walk-in basis only. The space will also be available for private parties and special events. A dedicated parking lot and street parking in the neighborhood are available for easy access.
