Manhattan Project’s Alice in Wonderland
The Town Players of New Canaan [TPNC] offers an exuberant version of Lewis Carroll’s classic story in an upcoming production of the rarely performed Manhattan Project’s Alice in Wonderland, the 1970’s Off-Broadway production that captured rapturous reviews, revolutionized experimental theatre, and toured the world. This high-energy fantasy play follows Alice down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass, where nothing is normal and madness awaits at every turn.
Not Your Daughter’s Alice
Featuring an original score composed by The Who’s tour conductor, Grammy-nominated musician Keith Levenson, TPNC’s production is imagined by acclaimed local director Peter Green. Over weeks of intensive rehearsal, Green and six dedicated performing artists have created both an homage to the original play and a new work that is completely their own. “Our Alice is madcap and playful, but also beautiful, elegant, surreal and deeply personal,” says Green. “This creative ensemble brings a powerful script to life that is unexpected, yet familiar. ”
Motion and Emotion:
Alice in Wonderland explores the human struggle for authentic connection and acceptance, as Alice navigates from one bizarre encounter to the next. Green notes that, “the play makes extraordinary physical and mental demands of the actors who all play multiple roles, making full use of a multi-level stage with audience members all around.” For the first time in its 40-year history, the Powerhouse stage and seating has been reconstructed as an intimate theatre-in-the-round that puts audiences close-up to the action of the play.
Talent Abounds:
Town Players of New Canaan is thrilled with Green’s direction of this ensemble cast: Patrick Duffy, Chandler Hall, Geoffrey Gilbert, Jessie Lizotte, Larry Reina, and Amy Wade. The acting company is supported by a creative team that includes local New Canaan talent: choreography by Holly Mensching; fight scenes by martial arts instructor and actor Gus Botazzi, custom-designed costumes by Gwen Bihl, and lighting design by Patricia Spugani. An innovative set by Joel Reynolds with set decoration by Alexandra Theodoropoulos will make you feel like you followed Alice down the rabbit hole. Alice in Wonderland provides an entertaining and transformative audience experience.
First-time special events around the production include:
- Cast talk-backs after the show on Sunday, 4/28; Friday, 5/3; Sunday, 5/5; Friday, 5/10
- Saturday night pre-show “Tipsy Tea Parties” offering wine and spiked tea for a donation
- Mimosa Madness Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12: Pre-show mimosa’s; drawing to win your own tea party with a selection of teas and treats
