The Connecticut River Ferries Past, Present & Future

Join ferry Captain Paul Costello as he showcases the histories of the Connecticut River ferries, their present status, and potential futures.

Before bridges spanned the Connecticut River, almost two dozen ferries traversed the banks in Connecticut-as far back as 1641. Today, there are only two remaining.

These two ferries carry a combined 42,000 cars and 100,000 passengers each year but are barely known to most of the state’s residents.

Paul has been working on the Connecticut River for more than 20 years. He is currently captain for the Connecticut State Ferry Service on the Rocky Hill and Chester ferries. He has worked on nearly every commercial passenger vessel operating on the lower Connecticut River, including the Essex Steam Train’s Becky Thatcher, Connecticut River Excursion’s Adventure and Lady Kate, and the Connecticut River Museum’s Riverquest.
