Did you know that the BLT protects more than 1,400 acres of open space in Branford? There are acres of Upland Forest including ponds, swamps, floodplain and vernal pools; and acres of Farm Land and Old Field. We protect Coastal Areas (tidal marsh and nearby upland), and we even own a few Rocks & Reefs, which provide resting spots for birds. We maintain more than one dozen nature preserves throughout town from the Farm River Preserve (west) to the Jarvis Creek and Hoadley Creek Preserves (east), and popular preserves in between, like Lucy Hammer Woodlands, Pieper Woods, the Jenny Vedder overlook near the Trolley Trail, and Van Wie Woods. The BLT manages 30+ miles of Hiking Trails on its preserves thanks to the ongoing effort of our Trails Crew, weekend Work Parties, and local volunteers. And we host a variety of school group, research work, nature walks, educational events, and guided hikes throughout the year, continuing our mission to preserve open space and promote Branford’s diverse natural features.
