Steep Rock Association is hosting a virtual Winter Speaker Series and invites the public to learn about local wildlife issues, land conservation, sustainable gardening, and the importance of pollinators. Each program aims to inspire participants about the wonders of the natural world and educate them on the importance of local conservation. Programs are carefully crafted to provide valuable insights, practical knowledge, and lively discussion. Participants may attend any or all programs.
Steep Rock will host its first program, “Connecticut’s Black Bears: Our Neighbors in the Wild” on Thursday, January 18th from 6:00-7:00 pm. Paul Colburn, Master Wildlife Conservationist, will raise awareness about bear populations, why human encounters with these majestic creatures are becoming more frequent, and how coexistence with bears is crucial. Colburn, a distinguished graduate of the Connecticut Master Wildlife Conservationist Program, will bring his extensive knowledge and passion for wildlife to the presentation. Participants will receive a comprehensive history of black bears in Connecticut, insights into their habitats, diet, behavior, reproduction, and the latest research efforts. Most importantly, he will share practical recommendations for optimal coexistence with black bears, a topic of growing relevance in our state.
In addition to the January program, the series continues in February with “Land Conservation 101: The Why and How of Preserving Your Property” presented by Steep Rock’s Director of Conservation Rory Larson. In March Patrick Horan, co-owner of Waldingfield Farm in Washington, will speak on “Bountiful Backyard Harvests: Mastering Sustainable and Organic Vegetable Gardening.” The series concludes in April with John Markham, President of the Litchfield Land Trust, sharing how to “Establish Pollinator Pathways in Your Backyard.”
