Review: Violent Femmes bring their first album to New Haven’s College Street Music Hall with an electrifying performance
In 1983, the Violent Femmes unleashed their self-entitled first album onto the world, and the rest has been history. Forty years later, the Violent Femmes are making the rounds and performing every song from that album to sold-out, ecstatic concert audiences. I had the incredible opportunity to witness one of these live performances at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven this past weekend, and it was an electrifying experience that left me in awe. From the moment they stepped on stage, they banged out one electrifying, nostalgic hit after another from that first album, and the crowd went wild.
The band’s performance was nothing short of phenomenal, with each song sounding pretty much as it has for the last forty years. Their invigorating sound showcases their continued musical prowess and mastery of their craft. The chemistry among the band members was evident, adding a dynamic and authentic element to their entire set.
Gordon Gano’s distinctive voice echoed through the venue, delivering the iconic lyrics that we all know and love. Brian Ritchie’s basslines and Victor DeLorenzo’s percussion were the perfect complement, creating a rich and powerful sound that reverberated throughout the hall.
The setlist was a nostalgic journey while also introducing some newer tracks that seamlessly integrated with their classic hits. The crowd sang along passionately, creating a sense of unity and shared love for the music and the band itself.
The Violent Femmes’ concert at College Street Music Hall was a musical masterpiece. Their talent, stage presence, and ability to connect with the audience made for an extraordinary night of music that will be etched in my memory and all who attended for years to come.
