Simsbury VFW and American Legion Posts to hold U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony in October
The public is invited to attend the inaugural ceremony for a newly constructed U.S. Flag Retirement Platform located behind the Weatogue Fire Station, 251 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT on Saturday, October 14 at 3:00pm.
Two years ago, the Simsbury VFW and American Legion Posts decided to create a flag retirement platform for the use by all service organizations in the Farmington Valley to retire U.S. flags, by burning them, in memory or commemoration of their members. Funding was provided by the two Posts along with grants and donations from UNICO National – Avon, CT Chapter, Abigail Phelps Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Aquarion Water Company. The Home Depot Foundation very generously donated an 8’ x 8’ wooden Tuff Shed® for the use of storing flags and other equipment. It is next to the platform along with a sign acknowledging the donors of this project. Supporting this project is the Town of Simsbury, The Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company and Simsbury Fire District.
The inaugural ceremony is open to the public. It will be held in a professional manner following selected parts of the American Legion’s “Ceremony of Retirement of Unserviceable and Old Colors.” The intent is to make this a well-used and respected venue for proper U.S. flag retirements in the future. Anyone who belongs to service organizations wishing to use the platform in the future is invited to attend.
Individuals or groups attending are welcome to bring one U.S. flag for retirement. The Simsbury VFW Post has collected hundreds of flags through donation boxes in Simsbury and will retire those after the ceremony concludes. It may take up to two hours to properly retire all the flags collected.
