Connecticut Sun sweep Washington Mystics with a win in D.C.
The Connecticut Sun (23-10) defeated the Washington Mystics (15-18), 68-64. The Sun sweep the Mystics in 2023 regular season action, 4-0.
The Sun was led by Alyssa Thomas who finished with her league-leading 23rd double-double of the year, tallying 22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block. Her 23rd double-double ties Tina Charles for most double-doubles in a single-season in franchise history.
1Q- Connecticut trailed Washington, 11-9, heading into the first media timeout of the contest. Tiffany Hayes had five points in the opening minutes to lead the Sun. The Sun were able to outscore the Mystics, 10-7, the rest of the way to take a one-point lead into the second, 19-18. Thomas tallied six points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block through ten minutes of play to lead Connecticut.
2Q- Both teams struggled offensively to open the second quarter, each only tallying two, with 6:49 to play in the first half, 21-20. The Mystics went on an 8-0 run to push take a seven-point lead, 28-21, forcing the Sun to take a timeout with 4:07 to play in the second. The Sun ended the half on a 15-3 run to take a five-point advantage into the locker room. Thomasnotched 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in the first half to lead Connecticut.
3Q- The Sun opened the second half on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 12, 43-31, forcing the Mystics into a timeout with 8:28 remaining in the third. Thomas had four of Connecticut’s seven on that spurt. Washington outscored Connecticut, 19-15, the rest of the way to cut the Sun’s lead to eight, 58-50, heading into the fourth. Thomas had eight points in the third to lead Connecticut in scoring.
4Q- The Mystics opened up the fourth on a 7-2 run to cut the Sun’s lead to three, 60-57, with 7:13 to go in the game. Washington continued to push, tying the game 63-63, with an elbow jumper from Shakira Austin with 1:54 left in the fourth. DeWanna Bonner responded with a three-point field goal on the other end for the Sun, taking a 66-63, lead. Austinhit one out of two free throws, cutting the Sun’s lead to two, 66-64, with 34.7 second remaining on the clock. Washington had the chance for the win with a Brittney Sykes three-point attempt with 7.0 seconds left in the game, but it was short.Bonner sank two free-throws on the other end to secure Connecticut’s 68-64 win.
Washington was led by Natasha Cloud who finished with 19 points, four rebounds, five assists and one steal.
Connecticut shot just 39.3% from the field, but held Washington to 35.5% from the floor on the night.
Sun Notes:
- DeWanna Bonner finished with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win.
- Tiffany Hayes tallied her eighth-straight double-figure outing with 12 points, along with five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
- The Sun outscored the Mystics in the paint (30-22) and on the fast break (6-2). Washington capitalized on more second-chance opportunities (10-4).
- DeWanna Bonner reached 550 career-steals in tonight’s game. She is just 1 of 13 players in league history to achieve the feat.
- Natisha Hiedeman eclipsed 200 career-three-point field goals.
- DeWanna Bonner passed Rebekkah Brunson for 7th all-time in WNBA history in defensive rebounds (2,191).
- Alyssa Thomas has notched 20 points in four of her last five contests.
