The artists will talk about their work at 4 pm. The show can be seen from August 22 to September 17 from 12-5 every day at 70 Sanford Street in Fairfield. See www.artplacegallery.org or call 203- 374-9720 or 646- 258-6912.
Art/Place is a non-profit, artist-run gallery that has been in existence for more than 40 years. It features a new show by one or two members every month and several group shows a year.
MARY LOUISE LONG was born in Omaha, Nebraska and is now a Stamford resident. She was a Lecturer in Art and Curator at Bloomfield College in New Jersey, received a Painting Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Her biography is listed in Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who of American Women.
Mary Louise has exhibited her paintings and prints in galleries and museums in the United States and her work is in numerous private and public collections. Brilliant colors and powerful abstract forms are central to what she creates. Though not conceived directly from nature, there always are references to the visible world. Ancient myths and legends also contribute to the content. She states, “The human condition is of utmost importance…I search for that subjective shape that stirs the viewer to bouts of recognition and denial.”
BEVI BULLWINKEL studied with artists in California, Maine, and Connecticut. She has exhibited her artwork throughout the Northeast,
Bevi says, “Painting to me is like poetry. The importance lies in emotions that are evoked by viewing art. My wish is to create a sense of the transience of being and the mystery of the unknown,”
FLORENCE ZOLAN studied art at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon, and other art centers. She received her MFA from Hunter College and taught print classes at MOMA with Sol Lewitt. She has exhibited statewide in juried and invitational shows. Florence is a cofounder of Art /Place Gallery, and a member of Silvermine Guild, the Surface Design Association, and the Artists Collective of Westport. Her work is in corporate and private collections.
Florence states, “I enjoy the process of printing. I combine mediums. Using varied layers of collage, pastel, threads ,objects and inks, work is transformed into a completed whole.”
SANDRA MEAGHER says her art training includes, among others, the Art Students League, Robert Reed seminars, and workshops at Silvermine. Although known best for work in black and white, she says she “chose color as the story for this show.”
