Twelve Angry Men, the classic courtroom drama written by Reginald Rose, comes to life in the 2004 Broadway staging. Performed at the American Airlines Theater, the play follows the deliberations of a jury forced to decide the fate of a teenage boy accused of murder. First a teleplay in 1954 and later a movie in 1957, this adaptation of Rose’s work preserves its gripping intensity.

From the 16th to the 24th of June, the Town Players of New Canaan will perform Twelve Angry Men at the Powerhouse Theater in Waveny Park, New Canaan. A Fairfield County, Connecticut venue for this work could not be more appropriate. The playwright, who died in 2002, was a Westport resident. The production’s director and co-star, Mike Boland, was born and raised in the town of Fairfield. And most of the cast is also locally based.

The Town Players of New Canaan are fortunate to avail themselves of Mike Boland’s talents and experience. Mr. Boland has been associated with several professional productions of the play throughout his distinguished acting career. He has not only directed readings of the work, but played four different roles in its 2006-08 Broadway National Tour, which starred Richard Thomas and George Wendt, and was produced by the Roundabout Theater Company. When all is added up, Mr. Boland has been involved in close to 600 performances of Twelve Angry Men.  It might be said that he knows the play more intimately than anyone living.

The Town Players of New Canaan, a community theater organization in its proud 76th year, is doing something unusual in showcasing professional actors working along with non-union performers for this very special production. Asked why he chose to work with a community theater, Mr. Boland stated, “I got my start in community theater, and that is why I am excited to bring together professional and local talent to tell this story as originally staged by Reginald Rose. The Powerhouse Theater provides an intimate setting where each audience member will feel like a fly on the wall overlooking a jury in deliberation.”

Tickets may be purchased for $40 ($35 for seniors, $25 for students) on the Town Players’ website: https://our.show/12angrymen.   For more information on the show and for specific performance days and times, go to tpnc.org.
