On June 28th Tony Trischka will bring his EarlJam – A tribute to Earl Scruggs to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook.
Tony Trischka is a master banjo artist, with more than 50 years of experience inspiring generations of bluegrass and acoustic musicians. His unique style and passionate playing bring out the multifaceted sounds of the banjo like no one else.
Experience the music of the legendary groundbreaking bluegrass musician, Earl Scruggs, as interpreted by Tony. Honor the legacy of Scruggs with Tony’s fresh yet traditional take on his three-finger bluegrass banjo style.
Trischka recently came across an extremely rare recordings of jam sessions between Earl Scruggs, and John Hartford. It features never-before-recorded solos from Scruggs, transcribed and recorded note-for-note. Scruggs has many songs he never recorded.
This album features an all-star lineup of bluegrass musicians, curated by founders of Rounder Records. Each track brings an old-fashioned bluegrass flavor, updated for modern ears.

This unique show, which debuted at Joe’s Pub in New York City, is a re-telling of Scruggs’ history from his childhood to his legacy. “Earl is my North Star, a lifetime pathway. And I’m not alone,” says Trischka, a banjo innovator and educator who has influenced everyone from Béla Fleck to Steve Martin. “Through his music, this shy kid from Flint Hill, North Carolina went on to enrich countless thousands of lives. At the age of 13, when I first heard 16 notes of Scruggs style banjo playing, I put down my folk guitar and mercilessly pestered my parents to buy me a banjo. Once in my hands, that 5-string became my obsession and has been for 60 years.”
He adds, “the depth of his genius becomes ever more apparent when I transcribe his solos, which I’ve been doing my entire musical life and with renewed vigor. Discovering new twists and turns in his playing is pure joy and in fact the inspiration for this tribute show and album.”
