5 questions with Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell
Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell brings her show True Tales of Sex, Success, and Sex and the City to Fairfield Theatre Company on Friday
Carrie Bradshaw is one of the most influential characters in television history. From her love of fashion, storytelling, not to mention her relationships with her unforgettable girlfriends and the epic love story with Big that kept us on all our toes for years. What’s the story behind Carrie’s inspiration, the lunches, the parties, and the shoes? Candace Bushnell will tell you about it this Friday, October 11 at the Fairfield Theatre Company during her one woman show, True Tales of Sex, Success and Sex and the City.
Born and raised in Glastonbury, Bushnell moved to New York City to kick off her writing career. Little did she know while she was kicking off her career, she was also going be a part of one of the most influential characters in television. I recently talked to Bushnell about Sex and the City and her favorite part of Connecticut.
Can you tell me about the Tales of Sex, Success, and Sex and the City?
Yes, well it it’s my life story how I came to New York.And you know some of the success that I’ve had. Really, combined with the origin story of sex in the city. How I created it? Why I invented Carrie Bradshaw? And you know, as I say, what happened? To me afterward. And you know the show answers some questions like. You know, was there a real Mr. Big? And I talk about the girlfriends and success. And then a couple of little cheesy sex stories thrown in for good measure. It’s a great evening out. It’s a lot, a lot of women come and they bring all their girlfriends and people wear their shoes. So it’s really like a celebration of Sex And The City in a lot of different ways.
Do you have a favorite aspect of Sex and the City?
I love the friendships and that it just seems very real. I think that’s really Important for women to have their girlfriends.
Do you think of yourself as an influence or role model for women?
You could tell me that I am. But I think it’s hard to to to think of oneself in that way, I suppose. You know, I try.
When someone mentioned Sex in the City what does that mean to you?
Well, usually they’re talking about the TV show, so I think it’s. It’s usually a certain point of view. Outlook, you know, a lot of women just come up to me and say that and their sex in the city just gave them permission to think of them, think of themselves and their lives in a in a different way. In a more expansive kind of way, and that they felt permission to to be themselves.
Do you have a favorite thing about Connecticut?
It would be the scenery. You know, just having grown up there and then in the history of Connecticut is very interesting. My family came to Connecticut a long time ago, in the 1600s and settled down around Old Saybrook. So you know, for me, I guess it’s kind of in my blood, Connecticut.
