See Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals on Sunday October 1, 2023
In 2015, after a seven-year hiatus, Ben Harper reunited with his band, the Innocent Criminals, for a live tour. The band members, which included percussionist Leon Mobley, bassist Juan Nelson, drummer Oliver Charles, keyboardist Jason Yates, and guitarist Michael Ward, soon realized that Harper had more than just revisiting their hits in mind. He had been quietly gathering material for a new album, Call It What It Is, and had even scheduled the first recording sessions before rehearsals for their successful four-night reunion shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
Since his first album, Welcome To The Cruel World in 1994, Harper has released eight studio albums over a period of 15 years. This exceptional streak, which included contributions from the Innocent Criminals, established Harper as a powerful songwriter and performer with the ability to blend the personal and political across multiple genres. He received numerous accolades, including Rolling Stone’s praise for his “unique and exquisitely tender rock & roll,” Entertainment Weekly’s recognition of his “casual profundity,” and Billboard’s acknowledgment of his music’s ability to remind us of the power and beauty of simplicity. With sold-out tours worldwide, Top 10 debuts in the US, Gold and Platinum certifications overseas, and numerous TV appearances, Harper and his band solidified their status as global stars.
Ben Harper is a talented American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His music style is a combination of blues, folk, soul, reggae, and rock, and he is highly regarded for his guitar-playing prowess, vocal skills, live performances, and activism. Harper has released twelve studio albums, primarily through Virgin Records, and has toured extensively across the globe.
Harper is a three-time Grammy Award winner and has been nominated for seven awards. He won the Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album awards in 2004, as well as the Best Blues Album award in 2013. Additionally, the joint composition between Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, “No Mercy in This Land,” was recognized as Song of the Year at the 40th Blues Music Awards ceremony.
