The Philadelphia-based band Mt. Joy to perform on Sunday afternoon
Mt. Joy is a Philadelphia-based band consisting of Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), Jackie Miclau (keys, piano), and Michael Byrnes (bass). The band’s name is inspired by a rural town in southwest Pennsylvania, located four hours away from their base in Philadelphia. They formed in 2016 and gained recognition in 2018 with the release of their self-titled album, which included the #1 AAA radio hit Silver Lining. This song has garnered over 120 million streams on Spotify to date. Mt. Joy’s second album, Rearrange Us (2018), received critical acclaim and the band has since amassed over 500 million streams. They have been praised by NPR, Billboard, Rolling Stone, and other publications. Mt. Joy has performed at various festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Bonnaroo, and have toured with acts such as The Lumineers, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, The Revivalists, and The Head and The Heart. In addition, they have appeared on TV shows such as Stephen Colbert, CBS Morning, Samantha Bee, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, and Conan.
The color orange is often associated with various positive traits such as creativity, freedom, and fire in different cultures and belief systems. In June 2022, Mt. Joy released their third full-length album titled Orange Blood, which embodies the bright and bold energy of this color. The album features a diverse range of sounds, including dreamy melodies, psychedelic rock driven by guitar, and alternative music influenced by the Southern California desert.
Mt. Joy’s songs unfold like good political speeches: They amble and converse and pulsate fervently until it’s time to get the crowd chanting along.

The pandemic disrupted the band’s tour with The Lumineers in 2020, leading Matt and Sam to seek refuge in the desert. While in a house with Matt’s girlfriend and brother, the group drew inspiration from the desert’s beauty, engaging in shroom-fueled detours and deep conversations about life. These experiences eventually led to the creation of Orange Blood.
Lead singer Matt Quinn explains that the color orange played a significant role in the album’s concept. “In the desert, everything revolved around the sun,” he says. “I started to think about how the light we see is like an orange blood that flows through all of us, giving life to everything it touches.”
Compared to their previous album, which had a darker tone, Orange Blood seeks to find beauty in a world that can often feel chaotic and sad. The band wanted to appreciate their surroundings, even in decay. After returning to Philadelphia, they put the finishing touches on the album with the full lineup and longtime producer and collaborator Caleb Nelson.
Mt. Joy is set to take the stage on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 4:05 pm at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut
