2023 Sound on Sound Music Festival Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers to bring their unique mix sound of classic hits and new music to Sound on Sound on Saturday
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, also known as RHCP, are a rock band hailing from Los Angeles. They formed in 1982 and consist of vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante. Their music draws from a variety of genres, including alternative rock, funk, punk rock, hard rock, hip hop, and psychedelic rock. Their unique sound has influenced other styles like funk metal, rap metal, rap rock, and nu metal. With over 120 million records sold worldwide, they are one of the best-selling bands in history. They also hold several records, including the most number-one singles, most cumulative weeks at number one, and most top-ten songs on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The band has won six Grammy Awards, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The original lineup of the Red Hot Chili Peppers consisted of Kiedis, Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons. However, Slovak and Irons did not play on the band’s debut album due to commitments to other bands. Instead, guitarist Jack Sherman and drummer Cliff Martinez played on the album. Slovak rejoined the band for their second album, Freaky Styley, and Irons returned for their third album, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.
With new members Frusciante and Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded their next two albums, Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The latter became their first major commercial success. However, Frusciante struggled with the band’s newfound popularity and left during their tour in 1992. After a few temporary guitarists, Dave Navarro joined the band for their sixth album, One Hot Minute. Although it was successful, the album couldn’t match the critical or popular acclaim of Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
In 1998, Frusciante rejoined the band after Navarro’s departure. Their seventh album, Californication, became their biggest commercial success, selling 16 million copies worldwide. They continued to have success with their next two albums, By the Way and Stadium Arcadium, which became their first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Frusciante left the band again in 2009 to focus on his solo career, and Josh Klinghoffer replaced him for two albums before Frusciante rejoined the band once more in 2019. They released their latest albums, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, in 2022.
Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to take the stage at 9:45 on September 30, 2023 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut
